Paintings by a prodigy

Autumn de Forest, who turns 9 this month, has become one of the art world’s youngest and biggest stars. Dozens of her paintings have sold at auction for a total of about $250,000. Here is Autumn in 2009 at an art fair in her native Las Vegas. Then 7 years old, she presented work she had completed at age 6, the year she discovered her full talent.

'Distant Flowers'

One of the art masters to whom Autumn is often compared is Henri Matisse. Like him, she uses vivid colors and often paints flowers.

'Barbie Marilyn'

Autumn loves her Barbie dolls, and drew on them for inspiration for this work. It sold for $15,000 at auction.

'Autumn Ram'

Cattle skulls are also a frequent inspiration for Autumn, who comes from the desert climes of Las Vegas.

'Exploded Heart'

Autumn works in multiple styles, including abstract impressionism, surrealism, and pop art.

'Fetus Heart'

Autumn became fascinated with a display about a pregnant woman at an exhibition she attended with her mother at age 5; images of fetuses began turning up in her work.

'Good Night Moon'

A typical child when away from her studio, Autumn says she reads a lot of "girl books." She likes Judy Blume, but says she's not "a real Harry Potter girl."

'Island of Dreams'

Autumn has never had formal art training. But she has a number of well-known 20th century painters in her family tree, including Roy De Forest (1930-2007), Lockwood de Forest (1850-1932), and George de Forest Brush (1855-1941).

'Autumn Colors'

One of the most extraordinary things about Autumn's precocious talent is the range of her color palette.

'Elvis Warhol'

Though a normal child in most ways, Autumn has an unusual attraction for vintage TV shows and old movies and music.

'Dripping Hearts'

Another artist to whom Autumn is compared is Spanish surrealist Salvador Dali; this work is particularly reminiscent of him.

Picture perfect

Because some doubt that a child is capable of producing works as sophisticated as Autumn's, her father has recorded her at work in her studio.
