Why are crew socks trending?
With capris and jelly sandals continuing to hit the streets of New York City, it's no surprise that yet another nostalgic trend is having a moment this season. "Like everything in fashion, trends are cyclical, it was only a matter of time before the youthful generation got a hold of these," explains Christina Stein, a personal stylist and CEO of Style by Christina.
"I think socks can add a little bit of character to an outfit, it’s another accessory that we can use to add layers to an outfit and therefore make it a tad more interesting," says Stein.
Jessica Cadmus, a wardrobe stylist at Wardrobe Whisperer, and founder of Rogue Paq Accessories, is also not surprised that crew socks are becoming popular again. "The simple answer is that it’s their turn," says Cadmus. "We haven’t had a sock trend in quite a long time and socks are a fun accessory which can show personality and add a new detail to an outfit."
"The rise of athleisure fashion has also contributed to their popularity, as they pair well with sneakers and casual outfits," explains fashion stylist and costume designer, Karis Battle.

What are the best materials for crew socks?
When it comes to finding comfortable, lightweight socks, you will firstly want to consider the material. "This is kind of an over all sock rule, but you definitely want fabrics that breathe and are more durable. Stick to nylon and acrylic," says Stein.
"For crew socks, I recommend materials like cotton, merino wool, and blends that include spandex or elastane," suggests Battle. "Cotton provides breathability and softness, merino wool offers excellent moisture-wicking and temperature regulation, and a bit of spandex adds stretch for a comfortable fit," she explains.
Cadmus adds that natural materials are the best because they are the most breathable. "I like cotton, linen, or silk in warmer temps and wool in colder temps," she shares.
How to style crew socks
When it comes to styling your crew socks, Cadmus shares three outfit ideas that will have you looking like a runway model or influencer:
- Wear with strappy sandals and a maxi skirt or dress.
- Wear with chunky loafers and cropped flared trousers.
- Wear with sneakers and athletic shorts or pants and an oversized hoodie or jacket.
Battle agrees that crew socks can be worn with everything from sneakers and jeans to skirts and boots. "Experiment with different colors and patterns to add a fun element to your outfit," suggests Battle.
