The season of candles, cozy blankets and pumpkin spice is in full swing! But most importantly, it's our time to jump back into warmer clothing. We can confidently say that we're ready for the wools, knits and endless amounts of layers — and what layer looks cooler than a bomber jacket?

According to fashion blogger and stylist, Jana Meister, what gives a jacket its “bomber” name is its shape and where it lands on the body. “They’re a little more snug in the waist and a little roomier in the chest,” she explains. She also says they normally hit either right at the waist or slightly above.

We spoke with a few stylists and fashion experts to get the lowdown on how to style a bomber jacket for the breezier months ahead and beyond. Spoiler alert: This jacket style is way more versatile than you may think.

Read on for tips on how to style a range of expert- and editor-loved picks that will have your back no matter the occasion.

What is a bomber jacket?

It has a specific fit

According to Meister, what makes the bomber such an exciting piece and what keeps it trendy is its variety. “I think that’s what I love about [the bomber jacket]; that it comes in so many different fabrics and you can really do so much with it and style it so many different ways,” she says. Looks range from varsity jackets and more athletic aesthetics to dressier styles likely made from wool or tweed.

Luxury fashion stylist Lindsey Bernay is also a big fan of the bomber jacket, saying that it makes a great "third piece" — a garment that she's turned into a fashion rule of sorts for her clients. "You have to have a third piece. Your third piece to complete your outfit is generally a jacket," she says. "It just makes the look kind of elevated, and when you walk into a room, it gives a new sense of power." She loves that a bomber jacket is a cozy style that you can simply leave on as part of your outfit.

It's a waist-defining piece

With the latest trends pointing towards baggy, oversized trousers and denim, Bernay says you need to add something that highlights your waist. She says she loves bomber jackets "because they hit you at the smallest part of your waist no matter your size. The bomber jacket sort of tightens up that look and gives you that beautiful shape."

She emphasizes to many of her clients the important of bringing attention "down the middle" when styling, saying that the bomber jacket offers this illusion, therefore making any outfit look more complete.

There's a lot to love about this bomber jacket. It's super trendy looking, it's wildly affordable and the color options are tempting enough that you might consider grabbing one of each. We're loving the elegance of the smooth snap buttons and front pockets combined with the sportier stretch collar.

"If you’ve noticed over the last two years, all-white monochromatic shades and tones of creams and browns [give an] expensive [look] to our clothing. Wearing all one color really gives that luxe look, so if you don’t know what to wear, instead of wearing all black, throw this cream bomber jacket on over your black pants or wear back to your denim and, of course, dresses. This is a great way to look really put together out with your friends or at the office," says Bernay.

You can wear this with different shades of green, with a gray, with winter white, camel and over any patterned skirt. This is just such a great bomber to throw on, even over leggings and to and from running errands. It adds a little bit of style to your casual outfit.”

“This oversized option has been in my closet for as long as I can remember — I was instantly drawn to the pattern, which reminds me of my grandmother’s old couch. I’m excited that it’s getting cool enough to wear this without fear of excessive sweating; I’ve paired it with bike shorts and straight leg jeans thus far and it’s made those standard looks into statements.”

How to style a bomber jacket

What’s trending now

While the bomber jacket has long been a popular garment for both men and women, Meister says she’s lately noticed a change in the way many are starting to style them.

“I’m seeing some women wearing them even more oversized, so it kind of looks like they maybe borrowed it from their boyfriend,” she says.

So, why are they going bigger? Meister says that women’s bomber jacket styles usually have a snugger fit, which makes it hard to layer them. So, the more space you can add underneath, the more fashion play there is to be had. And with fall around the corner, layering season will also soon be upon us. When the temps drop, Meister says sizing up your jacket can accommodate more layers.

As for what you should look out for now, Meister predicts suede, wool, tweed and heavier fabrics will soon be on everyone’s radar as we start to transition into fall. However, if you’re in the market for an end-of summer style, she advices going for a sateen or cotton jacket for more of a lightweight option.

Expert-recommended ways to style your bomber jacket

Meister’s ideal look? “I love [a bomber jacket] with a henley or crew neck tee and a very clean, classic denim,” she says. She would also finish the look with a loafer or mule, a cute bag and a pearl earring. In the end, she says the goal is “just keeping it simple and letting that jacket be your statement piece in your wardrobe.”

Finding a jacket that proportionately works over a dress or skirt can be hard, but Meister believes the bomber offers a solution since it’s more flattering as it cinches at the waist. “You don’t lose your waist when you put it on,” she says.

Bernay believes the bomber is a classic piece that actually works with the current “oversized everything” trend we’re seeing right now. It works with the style, not against it. “You don’t really want to have two oversized styles,” she says. “[For] some people, that is their style, but if you are going for a more refined or polished look, having a cropped bomber jacket is the perfect juxtaposition.”

According to Bernay, the best way to style a bomber jacket, especially when wearing it with pants, is to make sure you’re pairing it with a shirt or blouse that is the same length. “You don’t want your shirt to be longer than the bomber jacket,” she says. “So, I love body suits, blouses tucked in with the bomber jacket over it [and] also cropped V-neck sweaters [and] turtleneck sweaters.

It can be styled for casual and formal wear

“I think when people think of bomber jackets, they think of more street style, casual, but there’s a lot of different ones that are out right now that have become really dressy with different embellishments,” says Meister.

The stylist recommends paying attention to details, like buttons and zippers, that can take the jacket in a cool and interesting direction. Bernay also expects to see bomber jackets this season with more appliqués, designs and even sequins.

Bernay also says wearing a bomber jacket for either casual outings or more elevated evenings depends on your fabric. She thinks a satin, leather or even a tweed bomber jacket could look amazing with your midi skirts and dresses. And if you’re looking for something you can pull out any time of year, she suggests going with a silk blend or cotton.
