When it comes to fashion, nostalgic trends have been making a comeback (such as platform mules and cargo pants). But this fall, studded flats are taking center stage. This shoe trend offers a bold statement and the ability to zhuzh up an outfit with minimal planning, but with the desire to show off, essentially, your feet.
If you're in the grunge era and love black, this trend will facilitate your wardrobe combinations. Plus, it can add some edgy character to your basics and essentials.
We talked to fashion experts to understand how to style this footwear without looking super saturated, and they offered tips on how to embrace the shoe style for the upcoming season.

Why are studded flats trending?
According to celebrity stylist Christina Stein, studded flats are a micro trend that comes from a minimalist interest in making something simple more interesting, plus embellished. "This comes from the no-logo era and the old money core trend," says Stein.
Also, many consumers are looking to embrace a simple aesthetic with a budget in mind, especially in a costly retail environment. In a recent article, experts explained why quiet luxury continues to trend in 2024.
Celebrity stylist Drew Cockrell expresses similar thoughts: "When you're going from fall to winter, you're able to add metal and keep warm. We tend to add the heavy elements of the stud details into our footwear, accessories and clothes without being overwhelming."
Below are some options that I've worn recently, plus stylists' recommendations for the upcoming fall season.
Studded flats recommended by editors
Affordable alternative: A New Day Issa Rhinestone Mary Jane Ballet Flats
- Roomy interior
- Very comfortable
- Need inserts
Size: 6-11 | Colors: 1 | Material: 100% polyester
This pair reminds me of the rhinestone-covered Alaïa pair from 2022 (which sold out at one point) — but now, you can acquire the trending look at an affordable price. I recently bought this style at Target and love how roomy the interior is, since it allows me to add insoles to add extra arch support.
Shine like a diamond: Cider Crystal-Embellished Ballet Flats
- Very comfortable
- Great quality
- Not offered in half sizes
Size: 6-11 | Colors: 3 | Material: Faux leather
Associate editor Allison Wise keeps eyeing this adorable pair of studs from Cider and plans to add them to her cart for fall. These also offer a roomy interior which makes it easy to pair with socks. Most shoppers find this style true to size and they are very sturdy for walking days.
Classy, yet edgy: LifeStride Cameo 2 Mary Jane Flat
- Cozy footbed
- Comfortable strap
- Not ideal for high instep
Size: 5-11 | Colors: 1 | Material: Faux leather
The simplicity in its design is what attracted me to this pair, yet you can preview the roughness in the stud details. Similar to all LifeStride shoes, this pair encompasses the comfort of the Soft System package which adds flex and cushioning to your soles. I enjoyed walking with them and enjoyed the added arch support. However, you might need to size up if you have a high instep, as the upper is a bit narrow.
Commerce editor Amanda Fama is also a fan of LifeStride shoes and agrees that the brand's insoles are often padded and comfortable.

Circular motion: Lisa Vicky Mantra Stud Mule
- Strap helps with support
- Can run wide
Size: 6-9 | Colors: 1 | Material: Leather
Cockrell recommends a pointy flat with bold stud details similar to a Valentino heel. With bubble-shaped details and a strap to hold your foot in every step, this is a great shoe to make a statement.
Now, you can score this pair for 60% off.
Spike through: Schutz Larissa Nappa Leather Flat
- Adjustable ankle strap
- Size down
Size: 5-11 | Colors: 2 | Material: Leather
Are you into balletcore? This shoe offers the edge and the softness of a ballet flat with its round toe shape. Stein recommends this brand for their trending offerings without falling into expensive shopping habits. Plus, the supportive ankle strap of this pair is even studded, adding to its edgy aesthetic.
Almost designer: Sam Edelman Michaela Gem Flat
- Roomy toe box
- Not enough arch support
Size: 6-10 | Colors: 1 | Material: Leather
"Sam Edelman is one of my top brands for the interpretation of the most expensive iteration," says Stein. If you don't want to invest in a designer pair like Miu Miu, this one is ideal for its leather construction and faux-embellished details. Also, it comes with a buckle strap that you can adjust.
Stud at every step: Steve Madden Glimmeer Black Studs
- Cushioned interior
- Roomy toe box
- Tend to slide off
Size: 5-12 | Colors: 4 | Material: Leather
Cockrell presented me with a mood board that featured this edgy mule from Steve Madden. With a slip-on design and a leather material, this shoe is a more avant-garde and laissez-faire take on the trend. It's easy to pair, with no hassle and just pure joy.
A bit of sparkle: Jeffrey Campbell Ladanse-J
- Breathable material
- Fits true to size
- Not enough arch support
Size: 6-11 | Colors: 4 | Material: Synthetic lining
This brand is another one Stein recommends for its affordability and ode to ballet core. "The benefit of this micro trend is that you can incorporate them into many different aesthetics." This style comes in different hues and offers breathability with its airy lining.
